Do you know where your friends are? Facebook is going to tell you.

Are your Facebook friends shopping at the near by mall or sipping tea at the local coffee shop? Facebook will soon be able to provide you with that answer.  Facebook will allow Android and IOS users to opt-in to a new location service called Nearby Friends.

Nearby Friends is an opt-in service compared to Facebook’s usual opt-out when Facebook launches new services. In the past, Facebook would notify you when one of your friends check into a location, but now you’ll be able to see where your friends are without them checking in.

If you choose to opt-in to Nearby Friends, you will also be able to select who can see your location.  You and your friends both have to turn on Nearby Friends and choose to share with each other to see when you’re nearby. Your friends will only be able to see that you’re nearby if you share this info with them and vice versa.

Another feature of Nearby Friends is that you can select to share your locations with someone up until a specific time.

Product Manager Andrea Vaccari wrote about this new feature:

“When Nearby Friends is on, you can see when your friends are traveling if they’re also using this feature and sharing with you. You’ll be able to see the city or neighborhood they are in, including on their profile. When you see a friend visiting a place you’ve been, it’s the perfect opportunity to send a recommendation for a great restaurant. You can also make last-minute plans to meet up with a friend who happens to be in the same place you’re headed to.”

Facebook is set to roll our Nearby Friends in the next few weeks.
